Rain, at last

Night in fierce battle against raging sun

Wind spectator, dancing carelessly through the sky,
running it nimble fingers over the land

Trees gathered, spreading their branches upward,
waiting for God to speak

Dry earth exposed itself to the heavens, hoping

Mountains raised their stony faces,
their whispered song carried away with the breeze

Animals and people scurried,
hiding in holes and homes,
read signs from the clouds

Silence for a moment.
And then it happened
Downpour,
seeping into the cracked ground
Splitter, splatter of joy
Filling waterholes and childrens mouths
silencing cries and pleas.

Rain, at last
