Welcome Home

Welcome it said,
yet how my instincts screamed for me to leave,
there was a pulse,
a tension,
heavy in the air,
menacing and waiting for me to move.

why was I in this house of dust,
where light itself would not go.

I had the smell of ash in my nose,
the taste copper in my mouth,
there but gone,
past and present intertwined.

the silence was unnatural,

unnerving,

watching my every move.

a dead silence,
as if the living had abandoned this place.

i tried not to feel, to see, to hear,
what lies beneath,
the memories behind every door,
every wall.

if I listened would i hear the whispers?
the yells?
the screams?

this place of pain,
of horror,
of hell,
why did I come back?

flashes of memory are there at every turn,
every slash,
ever touch.

my mind told me to breath,
to move,
to scream,
to do anything at all,
but to do anything would be to accept that it happened,
to believe it was real,
to accept the memories as mine.

all I could do was run,
physically,
mentally,
past the worn welcome of this place,
into the dark night,
the door still open in the distance,
waving,
waiting for me to return once again to the place called home.
