Styrofoam Cups

styrofoam cups,
sitting there,
equally between you and I.
walls of white,
barriers to our words,
captivating our very souls
as we stare into them deeply,

silently

intently

hoping to find the answers to questions we desperately want to know.

how long has it been,
since the last we last spoke?
the years have flown by,
the walls of distance and silence sitting between us.
can we even begin to talk again?
is it possible our bonds could have survived the passage of time?
could our memories, our smiles, our laughter still connect us,
or even begin to bring us together again?

but this silence is heavy,
its weight too much for me to even raise my head.
I cannot look away from the white void before me.
if I look you in the eye what will you see?
could you see the me from so long ago,
unweathered by time and unchanged by life?
what would you see in me,
your friend, your brother?
or when you look at me would you see a total stranger,
different beyond recognition,
only being able to put a name to a face like a picture on a wall.

The fear is taking over,
and panic may soon set in,
I want to run, to hide,
to get away from this horrible white abyss.
but then,
suddenly,
there is a change, a shift in the very world,
and slowly you start to move.
you raise your cup slowly into the air,
fighting against its pull.
it is a gesture, a toast,
a defiance against all odds.
and as i watch,
you look directly into me,
and you smile at what you see.
I find my own hand mimicking yours,
and for the first time,
in a ray of hope,
the spell of silence is broken,
as you toast to us so warmly,
saying it with a smile in your voice,
"to old friends reunited,
let us never be silent again"

Wow. Well done, Brandon. I quite enjoyed this. Your varied line length worked well here and your prose kept me reading. Also, bravo on where you took the inspiration. I am impressed. Smiley Vote.
