The Universal Race

traffic passes and time passes
people talk, as does the breeze.
gray skies reflect gray eyes,
and waves flood shore like tears on cheeks.

happiness fleets fast,
though pain dissolves slowly.
and sadness only hovers.

dreams die violently
or dreams die silently
and fate still damned those star-crossed lovers.

hearts break more easily than glass
then broken hearts build walls not casts
while stains show on pure white lace

and even martyrs may fall from grace

transparent lies are
the universal race
